About Gamma Xi
Gamma Xi is the oldest continually active chapter in our district, thanks to the dedication of our Brothers. Here at Gamma Xi, we pride ourselves on our performance and strong sense of tradition. The purposes of our chapter are best explained in the Preamble to the Gamma Xi Constitution:Be it known that the Gamma Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, Honorary Fraternity for College Bandmembers, is an organization operating exclusively within the University of Maryland Bands on the College Park Campus for the following several purposes:
- To promote the existance and welfare of the University of Maryland Bands, and to cultivate and maintain a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements.
- To honor outstanding bandmembers through the privlege of membership, extended as a reward for technical achievement and appreciation for the best in music.
- To stimulate campus leadership and promulgate an umcomprimising respect, through the medium of the College Band, for gracious conduct, good taste, and unswerving loyalty.
- To foster a close relationship between college bands and promote a high average of attainment through the performance of good music and worthwhile projects.
- To provide a pleasant and meaningful social experience for all engaged in college band work, and to cooperate with other musical organizations in any manner consistent with the institution at which the chapters are located.
Before the construction of the Tawes Fine Arts Center in 1965, the Maryland Bands rehearsed in the University's Reckord Armory. After the construction of the Tawes Fine Arts Building, the old band room was donated to the bands for storage. Now, the Brothers of Gamma Xi and Sisters of Beta Eta care for this facility and have adopted it as their chapters' home. You have not visited the UM Chapters until you have visited the Armory. The bands moved to the state-of-the-art Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. This facility allows the Gamma Xi Brothers to have a brand new atmosphere for musical performance and service to the bands.
